Drumming

The night before we left for Ithala we were treated to an African dinner including a “drumming circle”. I’d always found these “cheesy” but in the local context it was a lof of fun…

We were each given a drum and were taught to play specific rhythmes… the drummers were also keen to focus us on collective effort.

Chamelion

A small group of us were on an evening drive… I was straddling the side of the jeep with a high powered light when the driver suddenly pulled over and plucked from the side of the road a blade of grass… this delightful Chamelion he found there… how he could see it in pitch darkness, with only the lights from his jeep, amazed all of us.

A couple of nights later I met him in the bar and he asked how I was going… I told him I’d never felt better. He replied that I should keep my smile, take it back home, and teach those that don’t to smile.

Ithala monkey

Don’t feed the monkeys we are warned… doing so will not incur a fine, but will result in the shooting of the monkey. By being fed they demand to be fed more. Their habits change and they are eventually put down!
